show: Flashback Feedback

Juno-nominated and widely considered one of Canada's foremost lyricists, Eternia continues to carry the torch for those Hip Hop aficionados who crave... More.

With six music video singles on international rotation, and three critically acclaimed full-lengths released through Urbnet Records - “Where I Been – The Collection” (2005) “It’s Called Life” (2005) & “Where I’m At – The Setup” (2007) – Canada’s “best kept secret” has paid good dues and is ready to prove it.

Eternia has toured extensively in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Australia, and Europe; those that are lucky enough to catch her on stage credit her as one of the best live performers they have witnessed. She has been billed with respected acts such as KRS One, Common, Pharoahe Monch, MC Lyte, Jeru the Damaja, Scratch of The Roots, O.C., Bahamadia, Roxanne Shante, Prince Paul, Necro, D-12, Saukrates, Jully Black, George Nozuka & more.

In 2005, following a slew of successful singles, videos & feature releases including “Work it Out”, “Sorrow Song” (Universal/Maple), “Understand If I” (Battle Axe Records), “Just the Way It Is” (Urbnet), and the chart-topping “Movin’” (‘Warner Records, Australia), Eternia proudly introduced to the world her most personal offering, the critically acclaimed Juno-nominated full-length: ‘It’s Called Life’. In 2007, Eternia followed suit with the independent mainstay: “Where I’m At – The Setup”, boasting an impressive roster of producers and featured artists including 9th Wonder, M-Phazes, Frequency, Torae, Ms. Davis, Wordsworth & more.

Last year, Eternia launched her extremely popular T-shirt design, “My Favorite Rapper Wears A Skirt” to thrilled fashion-conscientious fans worldwide. This year, Eternia completed her 4th full-length recording with “DJ Premier-affiliated Canadian super-producer MoSS” (NOW Magazine). “AT LAST” features guest appearances by some of Hip Hop’s elite, including Rah Digga, Lady of Rage, Jean Grae, Joell Ortiz, Termanology, Reef the Lost Cauze, Tona, Maestro Fresh Wes, Lil Jaz, & more. Eternia is at her finest over MoSS’s production, offering raw, confidant, & vulnerable first-person perspectives over gritty & moving soundscapes. Most recently, Eternia transformed herself from ‘that Canadian rapper’ to a household name on North American Hip Hop Web sites, with her weekly video episodes “’AT Last’ - Road to Release Day” garnering well over 25,000 hits collectively and featuring Hip Hop legends DJ Premier, Pharoahe Monch, Jeru the Damaja, 88-Keys, Marco Polo, Smif-n-Wessun & more.

Perhaps, for a moment, you can do as all Eternia’s peers have done: put aside race, gender, and nationality, close your eyes… and JUST LISTEN.

We guarantee you’ll Believe.

luciterra
show: SlamDance

Amber, Gillian, Jean Grey, and Naomi Joy collectively form the Vancouver based Tribal Fusion Bellydance troupe Luciterra. Through their dances, these women embody commitments to social justice, holistic health, and art innovation. They dance an intensely feminine and edgy fusion of old world vocabularies with new school stylings, to create an effect that is elusive, powerful, and compelling. Subverting socially constructed binaries with a multidimensional representation of femininity, they believe in the transformative power of sensual and proud performance.

The women of Luciterra have each been dancing since childhood, and while each dancer instructs professionally, they continue to expand their movement vocabularies by continuing to train both locally and internationally. Fiercely dedicated to technique, authenticity, and conscientious, respectful fusion, they strive to educate their students and audiences on the histories of the genre, and its relation to feminisms. Active proponents of contemporary folk and fusion arts movements, they are outspoken critics against the recent funding cuts in the province.

Luciterra has opened for many acts on Vancouver and Vancouver Island stages, including Max Pashm, Delhi to Dublin, Lynx and Janover, Tarran the Tailor, and Timothy Wisdom. They frequently collaborate with Vancouver based Balkan band Orkestar Slivovica. Selected performance highlights include the Shambhala music festival, the Sistahood Celebration, the Pivot Legal Society's Passion for Justice, the Screaming Chickens Spectacular, Workless Party Parties, Dollhouse Studios, and the In The House Festival Vancouver. They have been individually featured on the international television show "Shimmy," on NYC Broadway stages, the Vancouver Island Folk Music Festival, and at high profile events from the Yukon to the Mayan Riviera.

Majik and Edward Malaprop are boyish buddies and long-time members of
Vancouver's Drag King community. Their creative partnership began in 2004 as
performers with the seminal group Kings of Vancouver, and continued through
the subsequent formation of the dynamic Drag Kings United.  They've
performed on stages around Vancouver with both groups, and brought Vancouver
flavour to their performances in Chicago, Washington DC, Winnipeg, and
Austin.  After making a splash at the International Drag KingCommunity
Extravaganza as members of DKUnited, they tried their manly hands (and limp
wrists) at its organization, joining Bent Umbrella, the non-profit society
that brought this innovative conference to Vancouver in 2007.

Known for his smooth moves on stage and off, Majik is a hip-hop dancer
influenced by a variety of styles. The resident choreographer for DKUnited,
Majik has also created dance work for Chicago based queer performance
troupe, A Sordid Collective.  Edward Malaprop is an office minion by day and

off-beat appeal to his numbers, as well as an affinity for nerds.

Love isn't an emotion or an instinct - it's an art.
- Mae West

Closing your eyes might help you imagine West boldly sashaying across the screen, a wake of affected men left undeniably helpless in her thrall. If you've ever been left in that position, then you can understand Mz Chawls' potion of soul magic. At once a study in stunning contrasts, like platinum butterfly wings, the Toronto born Edmonton raised Mz Chawls operates in a sonic timecapsule possessing the assurance of Inez Foxx, the vulnerability of Tammi Terrel, and the smoldering intensity of Betty Wright. Mz Chawls is the Truth. Soul music seems to have come full circle with the re-introduction of greats like Al Green and Lee Fields to a younger audience, and now Tanika Charles marks its completion. The Toronto press concurs, as Now Magazine voted Tanika as best R&B of 2008.

The passion, heartache and hell fury of a woman scorned are captured with crystal clarity and conviction on Charles's smouldering 60s-esque ballad Think Of You, which hints at even greater things to come.

The completion of her debut solo Ep "what. what? what!" in March 2010 marks a pivotal point in the transformation of Mz Chawls from vocal deity into soul goddess. Equal parts epic heartache and a yearning call for love the album highlights the transformative powers of love, from lust-filled enthusiasm to break-up and make-ups, Tanika Charles has created an emotional expose on love. For the Ep's forthcoming single, "sillyhappywild", Mz Chawls teams with hot T-dot up and comer Rich Kidd to stir the pot in an bumpin' collaboration sure to set the tone. With a release party in late March and her first video scheduled for a May release, Mz Chawls expects to kick off a busy year.

Tanika cut her teeth as a touring vocalist with Bedouin Soundclash and music wunderkind Zaki Ibrahim. During a tour of South Africa in 2009, the friendship between Zaki and Tanika became a cocoon for the creative partnership seeding "what. what? what!", highlighted by Ibrahim's executive producer status. This time though, Mz Chawls has taken over, with an Ep showcasing not only an established Soul talent, but a maturing songwriter and musical arranger. But really, it's the raw honesty of her voice, equal parts honey and brandy, that tucks you in and puts you to bed.

Mae West would have approved.
